Simulated effects of floodplain restoration on plant community types

چکیده
Aims Channelization and artificial embankments have altered the natural flood regime of many rivers, impacting hydrological characteristics floodplain ecosystems their biological communities. This study was undertaken on a meadow to assess spatial patterns plant communities in relation soil physical chemical conditions, impacts restoration that involved embankment-removal. Location River Glaven, Hunworth, Norfolk, UK. Methods Fine-scale chemistry sampling conducted prior embankment removal, climatological conditions were monitored after removal. Hydrological/hydraulic modelling simulated groundwater levels for 10-year period changes aeration stresses community composition following Results Hydrology identified as primary driver composition. Soil fertility also important. Unique continuous measurements vadose dissolved oxygen concentrations using optodes indicated strong coupling between water table depth root zone concentrations. Reinstatement overbank flows did not substantially affect stress across most because pre-existing wet conditions. However, along river-floodplain ecotone, increased from normally associated with dry grassland those characteristic fen (p < 0.05). Conclusions restored may be suitable more diverse assemblages. Benefits flooding species richness transport propagules may, however, over-ridden without accompanying level management during growing season, or hay removal balance additional supply nutrients river floodwater sediment. Our results show hydrological/hydraulic combined quantitative measures water-requirements can provide practical adaptive tools estimate response changing regimes.

The role of stochasticity and priority effects in floodplain restoration.
This paper is a test of two widely held assumptions in the practice of riparian restoration: (1) if physical processes are restored, plant communities will naturally reassemble themselves, and (2) restored communities will resemble reference sites. Seasonal flooding was restored to two interconnected floodplains in the Central Valley of California (USA), and plant community establishment was st...
متن کاملTemporal effects of disturbance on community composition in simulated stage‐structured plant communities
In an era of global environmental change, understanding how disturbance affects the dynamics of ecological communities is crucial. However, few studies have theoretically explored the potential influence of disturbance including both intensity and frequency on compositional change over time in communities with stage structure. A spatially explicit, individual-based model was constructed incorpo...

15 صفحه اولSoil biochar amendment in a nature restoration area: effects on plant productivity and community composition.
Biochar (pyrolyzed biomass) amendment to soils has been shown to have a multitude of positive effects, e.g., on crop yield, soil quality, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration. So far the majority of studies have focused on agricultural systems, typically with relatively low species diversity and annual cropping schemes. How biochar amendment affects plant communities in more complex and d...
متن کاملRestoration of floodplain meadows: Effects on the re-establishment of mosses
Vascular plants serve as target species for the evaluation of restoration success as they account for most of the plant species diversity and vegetation cover. Although bryophytes contribute considerably to the species diversity of meadows, they are rarely addressed in restoration projects. This project is a first step toward making recommendations for including mosses in alluvial floodplain re...
